PSA B72 0200 Paint and PVD Coatings - Specification for External Parts
The standard “PSA B72 0200 Paint and PVD coatings - Specifications for exterior parts”, developed by the French automobile company Renault, describes the technical specifications of paints and PVD coatings for exterior parts. These parts can be made of plastic or metal. Materials subject to the certification process must comply with this standard.

Requirements are determined by the services provided by the material in terms of:
- Regulation and consumerism
- New product quality
- Properties after aging without use
- Properties after aging with use
- Compliance with PSA group business rules
- Technical specifications (mechanical, thermal, etc.)
On the other hand, the basic requirements for traceability are numbered according to automotive system engineering, for example MAT_VEH_TMA_301 for resistance to microorganisms (mold).
The encoding is in the format MAT_XXX_YYY_ZZZ:
- MAT stands for material
- XXX identifies the application:
- VEH for the entire vehicle system
- INT for indoor applications
- EXT for external applications
- SCM for under-hood applications
- YYY indicates localization
- TMA for all applications in the environment
- VIS for visible applications of the environment
- NVI for invisible applications of the environment
- ZZZ indicates serial number
Tests on painted or PVD coated sheets or parts begin 7 days after coating application to ensure a complete network structure. If paint is used on a metal substrate, corrosion tests are required according to this standard. For chrome-plated plastic parts coated with paint, the specifications of this standard are taken into account together with the tests described in the PSA B15 4140 standard.
All materials must comply with the PSA B20 0250 standard and the requirements of the Directive 2000/53/EC for end-of-life vehicles. In terms of product quality, the colour must comply with the PSA D15 5504 standard. Specular gloss measurements must be carried out in accordance with the PSA D25 1413 standard.
This standard also provides the properties after ageing resulting from use under the following headings:
- MAT_EXT_VIS_322 Paint with body colors
- MAT_EXT_VIS_322 Paint with other colors (except single-layer liquid dyed high gloss black) and PVD
- MAT_EXT_VIS_322 Single layer liquid dyed high gloss black
- MAT_EXT_VIS_323 Resistance to staining through biological attack (bird droppings)
- MAT_EXT_VIS_324 Resistance to staining from automotive fluids (single contact)
The features in use in this standard are listed under the following headings:
- MAT_EXT_VIS_423 Resistance to the impact of washing brushes
- MAT_EXT_VIS_423 Scratch resistance
- MAT_EXT_VIS_424 Resistance to high pressure cleaning
According to PSA Group work rules, the “MAT_EXT_VIS_522 Resistance to gravel” test must be performed according to the PSA D24 1312 standard.
In this standard, specific features are specified as follows:
- Water resistance:
- The Ford tank is tested according to the PSA D27 1327 standard. Its duration is 40 hours at 240 degrees. The first assessment is made after 1 hour. If a small bubble remains after the test, a new rating will be made after 24 hours. If the bubble disappears (rating 0), the result is good. Cross-cut adhesion is graded according to the PSA D25 1075 standard, Saint Andrew cross-adhesion is graded according to the PSA D25 5001 standard.
- Moisture swell test is performed according to PSA D27 1571 standard. Duration is 96 hours. Swelling / color change rating is expected to be 0.
- Adhesion: Testing is done according to PSA D25 1075. Grading is expected to be a or b.
- Chemical properties: Softening test with solvents is carried out according to PSA D27 5437 standard. Xylene wetting and ethanol wetting values are expected to be at least 3.
- Appearance properties: Body colors and other gloss colors except gloss black are measured according to the PSA D25 5540 standard. According to the PSA D25 1413 standard, gloss values are expected to be at least 85 GU (20 degrees) for varnished paints and at least 80 GU (20 degrees) for unvarnished paints. The target value for matt, satin and structured varnish or PVD is determined by the standard plate.
- Corrosion resistance (metal parts): Corrosion resistance for metal parts is determined according to the PSA B15 5050 standard. The definition of the requirements for these parts is made according to this standard for the relevant project.
Among the numerous testing, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies carried out for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services defined in the “PSA B72 0200 Paint and PVD coatings - Specifications for external parts” standard with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
