An SAE aviation standard, “SAE J860 Test method for measuring mass (weight) of organic trim materials,” describes a test method for determining the mass per unit area of materials used to trim automobile interiors, in grams per square meter.

These tests are carried out at a temperature of 23 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees and a relative humidity of 50 percent plus/minus 5 percent (standard atmosphere). When preparing samples, three 100 mm x 100 mm samples or as determined between the contracting parties are cut. For rolled goods, two samples are taken from each edge at approximately one-tenth of the width of the material and one sample is taken from approximately the middle of the width of the material. The samples should be placed as gradually as possible along the length of the rolled goods. For materials other than rolled goods, wood samples are cut from representative areas determined by the contracting parties. The length and width of each sample are measured with a ruler to the nearest 0,5 mm and the area of each is calculated in square millimeters. Each of the three test samples is weighed to the nearest milligram. Then, using the standard equation, the mass per unit area is calculated in grams per square meter.
Natural organic matter is matter composed of organic compounds, formed from the remains of organisms such as plants and animals and their waste products. The basic structures consist of naturally occurring chemicals such as cellulose and lignin, as well as various proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates, and these chemicals generally fall under the umbrella of naturally occurring organic matter. Naturally occurring organic matter (often called natural products) are chemicals found in nature and produced by living organisms.
The environmental concerns associated with the automotive industry are increasing and in recent years strict regulations and international standards have been intensified. The sector is increasingly moving towards a more sustainable approach in material selection. Recyclable and bio-based materials have been the preferred choice. Today, bio-based materials are constantly entering the market and there is an increasing focus on the use of by-products or waste from other industries to support environmental sustainability. These alternative materials usually consist of a textile substrate that can be modified in terms of its composition and often contains bio-based coatings as an alternative to leather and petroleum-derived materials. The coating of the textile material can be carried out by various direct and indirect methodologies depending on the characteristics, economic viability and the desired quality of the final material.
The automotive industry’s goal of achieving net zero emissions has put biomaterials in an advantageous position due to their generally lower emissions compared to traditional materials. Biobased materials find applications ranging from traditional uses such as wood veneers, cotton fabrics and leather seats to the production of polymers and reinforcement materials.
The development of sustainable materials represents a delicate balance between sustainability, innovation and the necessity to maintain cost efficiency. A major natural-based polymer used in the automotive industry is thermoplastic polyester. PLA (polylactic acid) has natural and biodegradable properties such as low softening temperature, slow aging and excellent chemical resistance at high temperatures. However, in order to be used in the automotive industry, this compound must meet certain properties that require physical and chemical modification processes.
Our organization, which has been trying to support businesses from every sector with its testing, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies carried out in a wide range for years, has a strong staff that closely follows the developments in the world in the field of science and technology and constantly improves itself. In this context, testing services in accordance with the "SAE J860 Test method for measuring the mass (weight) of organic trim materials" standard are also provided to businesses.
