TOGG PVE.0.01.08.0023 Odor, Fogging and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) Test

The “TOGG PVE.0.01.08.0023 Odor, fogging and volatile organic compounds (VOC) test” standard developed by the Automobile Enterprise Group of Turkey (TOGG) describes a procedure for evaluating volatile hydrocarbons (VOC) and odors formed by evaporation from components inside the vehicle. The sources of volatile organic compounds (VOC) in question are:

  • Textiles
  • Carpets
  • Adhesives
  • Sealants
  • foams
  • Skin
  • plastic parts
  • Movies
  • Foils
  • paints
  • Material combinations

There are several test methods available to detect volatile organic compounds:

  • Legal and voluntary
  • Materials and components
  • Subjective and metrological

In terms of component testing and material testing methods, this standard includes various material tests. Samples for testing can be taken from prototype or series. This standard also includes component tests (including assembly level). Therefore, this standard is classified as a component test, not a material test. However, this standard can be used in a large part of material testing.

This test specification applies to all complete vehicle verification programs, regardless of vehicle type. In some cases, for example with vehicle type-specific target values or tests, corresponding descriptions are recorded.

The descriptions of this test procedure are binding. Deviations from this standard are only permitted with prior approval. Deviations must be documented in test reports and reasons and details must be stated.

The test parameters and target values included in this standard serve as a guide and should be decided and adapted for each project.

Not all test methods listed in this standard are required for every component unless prescribed by law. A typical starting point for new product development is the standards “VDA 275 Control of formaldehyde emissions (CAS: 50-00-0) by materials” and “VDA 278 Testing of VOC and FOG emissions by thermodesorption” at the material level.

Standard material with standard finish and color should be used as early as possible. This allows early analysis of data including VOC values after 90 minutes at 30 degrees, FOG value (related to fogging) and formaldehyde concentration after 120 minutes at 60 degrees. These values are a clear basis for determining project-specific requirements, including subjective assessment, and timing for further testing methods.

Testing of components and subassemblies should not be done earlier than one week from the date of manufacture and later than four weeks from the date of manufacture.

Storage should be done in a temperature-controlled room (23 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees and 50 percent plus/minus 10 percent relative humidity).

Pre-storage of test samples is done 1 week before the test and care is taken not to contaminate the test samples by ensuring adequate air exchange in the storage room and sufficient space between the test samples. The test sample should not be placed on its visible side and a grid shelf should be used. Any deviations should be documented.

After production, the samples are individually packaged in an airtight manner in aluminum composite foil. Foils conforming to the “DIN 55531 Foils for packaging purposes - Aluminum composite foils” standard are used.

Avoid touching the samples with bare hands, if necessary use clean cotton gloves. Labels should not be placed directly on the samples or adhesive labels that may cause contamination should not be used.

Samples should never be exposed to direct sunlight or near a heat source.

For VDA 270, VDA 275, VDA 277, VDA 278 and DIN 75201, a minimum weight of 250 g or a minimum surface area of 2xDIN A3 is required per test sample type.

Emission chamber testing of components or semi-finished products requires at least 1 kg or 3 m1 of material per 1 m2 of chamber area.

Tests performed according to the TOGG PVE.0.01.08.0023 standard include:

  • Legal tests
  • Fogging test
  • Subjective odor tests
  • Formaldehyde emissions
  • Emission of organic compounds
  • Thermal desorption analysis
  • Sub-assembly in the emission chamber
  • Volatile emissions of indoor
  • Full vehicle interior volatile organic compounds (VOC)

Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses and evaluation studies that our organization has carried out for businesses in various sectors, it also provides certification and testing services defined in the “TOGG PVE.0.01.08.0023 Odor, fogging and volatile organic compounds (VOC) testing” standard with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
