VW PV 1503 Painting of Metallic and Non-Metallic Materials - Pressure Washer Test

VW PV 1503 Painting of Metallic and Non-Metallic Materials - Pressure Washer Test

The “VW PV 1503 Paint on metallic and non-metallic materials - Pressure washer test” standard, developed by the Volkswagen automotive company, describes a procedure for determining paint adhesion on metallic and non-metallic materials. The procedure uses three test methods to simulate the stresses created when surfaces are cleaned with a pressure washer:

VW PV 1503 Painting of Metallic and Non-Metallic Materials - Pressure Washer Test

  • Test A: Angle of straight impact on two intersecting legs of St. Andrew's Cross. For sites and suppliers without automatic testing equipment (e.g., made by Walter 1) and for component shapes that cannot be tested on equipment.
  • Test B: Angle of impact perpendicular to the centre of the St. Andrew's cross. DIN EN ISO 16925 standard contains test method A.
  • Test C: Longer test time and greater distance between nozzle and sample than PV 1503-B. Corresponds to test method C of DIN EN ISO 16925.

The test method to be used must be agreed upon with the relevant department.

Devices and ancillary equipment used in tests include:

  • Pressure washer:
    • PV 1503-A standard: products manufactured by Kärcher, for example.
    • Standard PV 1503-B/C: products manufactured by Walter, for example (equipment certified according to DIN EN ISO 16925).
    • Cutting blade (breakable blade 18 mm).
    • Closed cell blue extruded polystyrene rigid foam, flame retardant additive, ground.
  • Conditioning of devices or samples under test:
    • Before the evacuated pressure washer test (as received): Painted plastic parts are conditioned at 23°C plus/minus 5°C for 7 days or 60°C for 48 hours. This test is performed after the devices or specimens under test have cooled to 23°C plus/minus 5°C for approximately 2 hours. Painted metallic exterior parts and painted metallic parts mounted in the chassis area are conditioned in a standard atmosphere for 24 hours in accordance with VW Standard 50554.
    • Before the pressure wash test after loading: The load is aged for 240 hours in a condensation atmosphere with constant humidity, for example, according to DIN EN ISO 6270-2. Painted plastic parts are conditioned for 24 hours in a standard atmosphere according to VW 50554. Painted metallic exterior parts and painted metallic parts mounted in the chassis area are conditioned for approximately 24 hours in a standard atmosphere according to VW 50554.

The test parameters are listed in the table provided in the standard, based on PV 1503-A, PV 1503-B (corresponding to the test method A of DIN EN ISO 16925) and PV 1503-C (corresponding to the test method C of DIN EN ISO 16925).

After pressure washer loading, the equipment or sample being tested is visually inspected for peeling of the paint surface and the St. Andrew's cross. The degree of damage is assessed according to the test report section of DIN EN ISO 16925. Small areas of flaking, measuring up to 1 mm, in the cross-cut resulting from uneven cutting should be disregarded in the assessment. If traces of the substrate are visible to the naked eye in the peeling areas, the test cannot be evaluated.

The method described in the VW PV 1503 standard, also known as the steam jet test or pressure washing test, evaluates the adhesion and durability of paint coatings on both metallic and non-metallic substrates by simulating the stresses experienced during high-pressure cleaning.

The primary purpose of this test is to evaluate the adhesion of paint coatings to surfaces when exposed to high-pressure water jets. This test is crucial for ensuring the longevity and appearance of automotive components exposed to these cleaning methods.

The VW PV 1503 standard has been widely adopted within the automotive industry to ensure that paint coatings can withstand the mechanical stresses of high-pressure cleaning. Compliance with this standard is frequently required by suppliers of painted components to Volkswagen and its associated brands.

Compliance with the VW PV 1503 standard is crucial for suppliers and manufacturers to ensure product quality and adherence to Volkswagen's stringent standards. This standard is particularly important in the automotive industry for the durability and adhesion of paint coatings. The importance of this standard lies in the following reasons:

  • Resistance to high-pressure washing: Cars are regularly washed with high-pressure water. This test is performed to determine the resistance of coatings to these harsh conditions. If the paint or coating peels off easily, this creates serious quality and aesthetic problems.
  • Corrosion and damage prevention: When the coating is damaged, the underlying metal can corrode, potentially shortening the vehicle's structural life. This standard helps prevent this risk by testing the coating's adhesion to the surface.
  • Supplier quality control: Companies that supply parts to the Volkswagen Group are required to ensure their products pass this standard. This standard ensures consistent quality across Volkswagen's global supply chain.
  • Product development and material selection: This test allows materials engineers and coatings experts to analyze which coatings perform best. These test results also play a role in new product development.
  • International competition and approval processes: Compliance with this standard provides a competitive advantage in international markets. It is a mandatory quality criterion, especially for companies operating in the European market.

In short, the VW PV 1503 standard is a critical test that tests whether paint coatings fulfill not only their aesthetic but also their protective and functional duties. For suppliers, compliance with this test is not only a quality expectation but also a prerequisite for continued collaboration.
