The standard “MAN M 3150-4 Surface quality - Assessment zones - Bus (exterior parts and skeleton)” developed by the automotive company MAN describes a procedure for assessing the assessment zones of buses (exterior parts and skeleton) in terms of surface quality.

Essentially, the MAN M 3150 series of standards was designed to allow a uniform assessment of the surface quality and structure and colour harmony of coatings on MAN commercial vehicles (chassis and bus exterior coating). Meanwhile, the MAN M 3600 standard is fully applicable.
This series of standards applies to both in-house parts and purchased parts, regardless of the quality and type of component material (sheet metal, plastic, etc.).
The MAN M 3150-4 standard applies to the bus section. The general evaluation zones in the vehicle are defined in this part of the M 3150 series standards. The requirements for the relevant evaluation zones are included in the MAN M 3150-6 standard.
The evaluation zones are generally explained in the table provided in the standard. The evaluation zones can be defined with the help of this table. The MAN M 3602 standard must be applied for the evaluation of window connections. The standards in accordance with the overview table in the MAN M 3600 standard are valid for interior spaces.
The evaluation zones are generally explained in the table provided in the standard as follows:
If a part is divided into two different areas according to the pictures given in the standard, the paint job should be done for the better / higher area, the evaluation should be made according to the area definition and the pictures. Bus types not shown in the pictures should be evaluated according to the pictures shown. It should be ensured that these surfaces have suitable surface properties for assembly.
There are no requirements regarding the visual appearance of the surface on grey surfaces. However, it must be ensured that these surfaces have suitable surface properties for installation.
In the underbody area, the paint coating serves only the purpose of corrosion protection and does not have to comply with any visual specification requirements. In the case of an underbody area with an overcoating, the colorimetric criteria do not apply to this area.
As a result of production conditions, deviations in the area definition may occur in individual small areas of the three zones (for example, due to spray shadow on the back of the wings or in the door hinge area). These areas are examined by the responsible technical department in consultation with the painting department individually and are released with this form if no improvement is possible in the painting process.
The rear side of all parts is defined as grey zone without any requirements regarding surface quality. Only the rear side of all wings (without front wing) and the luggage compartment doors are defined as Zone 3. All edges must be defined as the same zone as the front side/body side including radius deviation. If stone protection is applied, the lower body area is defined as Zone 3.
Among the numerous testing, measuring, analyzing and evaluating studies that our organization has carried out for businesses in various sectors, it also provides testing services defined in the “MAN M 3150-4 Surface quality - Evaluation areas - Bus (external parts and skeleton)” standard with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
