The GMW 3405 standard, developed by General Motors, describes a test method for determining the ability of automotive textile materials to resist seam fatigue failure when used in stitched assemblies. This test method is applicable to textile materials stitched together in sets.

The dynamic seam fatigue testing device used in these testing methods is designed to determine the strength of the seam structures used in upholstery coatings. Stresses in the seam are generated by applying cyclic, impact, and penetrating loads. The warp thread in upholstery seams, the filler thread in fillers, and the warp thread in upholstery are tested. The test is considered successful if the seam opening is 3 mm or less. During this test, a specimen is placed in a station with a clamp spacing distance as required by the appropriate test specification. A specific weight is attached to each outer clamp carrier, and an adjustable rack is provided for test specifications requiring the load to be unloaded during each test impact. At the end of the test, the specimen is evaluated for tearing, hole elongation, and yarn breakage.
Sewing fatigue testing in automobile textiles is carried out for fabric, vinyl and leather materials. The mechanical components of the testers used are made of non-corrosive aluminum and solid stainless steel. It has durable powder coating and anodized surfaces. It has precision ball and needle bearings. It features a programmable count controller with auto-stop, adjustable test speed controls, adjustable weight rack height and adjustable clamp release distance.
In seam fatigue tests of automotive textiles conducted under the GMW 3405 standard, the productivity and quality of the finished textile are determined. The testing equipment used is also based on the following standard developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM): ASTM D4033-92 Standard test method for resistance to thread slippage at seams in upholstery fabrics (dynamic fatigue method). According to the requirements of this standard, the testing equipment measures seam openings caused by thread slippage under dynamic loading. The testing equipment applies a constant specific pressure at a specific frequency on the sewn samples. The tested samples are evaluated according to the seam opening conditions.
Our organization also provides sewing fatigue testing services in automobile textiles, within the scope of GMW 3405 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
