The standard “VOLVO STD 420-0002 Assessment of deterioration of paint coatings - Determination of degree of rust” developed by the Volvo car company describes a procedure for grading the degree of rust formed on parts tested or used under accelerated or atmospheric conditions.

The degree of rust formation is graded according to the pictorial standards included in the standard. The approximate rusted areas shown in these photographic reference standards (rust passing through the surface plus rust visible below the surface) are as indicated in the table provided in the standard. The pictorial standards are selected from the European rust scale published by the European Paint, Printing Ink and Artist Colours Manufacturers Associations, Brussels Committee (CEPE).
The photographic representations in this standard should not be used as photographic reference standards. Photographic reference standards can be requested from the link below each image. These photographic reference standards are for the internal use of Volvo in the European Union only.
The correlation between the ISO and European rust scales is shown in a separate table.
The approximate correlation between the ISO rust scale and the “ASTM D610-08 Standard practice for evaluating the degree of rust on painted steel surfaces” standard rating system is given in another table.
The pictorial standards provided are primarily designed to grade the degree of rust on painted steel surfaces. They can also be used to determine the degree of corrosion on painted non-ferrous metals if the pattern of deterioration is comparable to that in the standards. If the average dimensions of the rust spots on the test piece differ significantly from those shown in the standards, an indication of their size may be given by reference to the grading scheme given in the table to the standard “Paints and varnishes - Assessment of deterioration of coatings - Determination of the amount and extent of defects and the intensity of uniform changes in appearance - Part 1: General system of identification and determination”.
The test report must include at least the following information:
In its technical content, this standard complies with the standard "ISO 4628-3 Paints and varnishes - Assessment of deterioration of coatings - Determination of quantity and size of defects and intensity of uniform changes in appearance - Part 3: Assessment of degree of rusting" developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). This ISO standard provides a method for assessing the degree of rusting of coatings by comparison with pictorial standards. The pictorial standards provided in this standard show coated steel surfaces deteriorated to different degrees by a combination of rust broken through the coating and visible under-rust. The pictorial standards are selected from the European rust scale published by the Confederation of European Paint, Printing Ink and Artists' Colours Manufacturers' Associations. The correlation between the ISO scale and the European rust scale is shown in the standard. In addition, the correlation between the ISO scale and the ASTM D610-08 standard grading system is included in the annex of the standard. Rust formation on uncoated steel surfaces is determined according to ISO 8501-1 standard (rust grades A, B, C and D).
For the purposes of this standard, degree of corrosion refers to the rating that characterizes the degree of rust formation (rust cracking and visible sub-rust) in a coating.
Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses and evaluations that our organization has carried out for businesses in various sectors, it also provides testing services defined in the standard “VOLVO STD 420-0002 Evaluation of paint coating deterioration - Determination of rust degree” with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
