Hyundai Kia MS 341-17 Tensile Test

Hyundai Kia MS 341-17 Tensile Test

The "Hyundai Kia MS 341-17 Tension Test" standard, developed by Hyundai-Kia Motors Corporation, Korea's oldest motor vehicle manufacturer, specifies the requirements for acoustic pads used for sound absorption in vehicle interior upholstery. This material is typically used as an acoustic pad for interior components or as specified on drawings. This material is established according to the "Type" table provided in the standard. Types are determined as follows:

Hyundai Kia MS 341-17 Tensile Test

  • Microfiber (fiber mix normal type)
  • Microfiber (100 percent PP microfiber)
  • Microfiber (fiber blend bulky type)
  • Microfiber (fiber mix normal type + AL film)
  • Microfiber (fiber mix bulk type + PET FELT

The general requirements in this standard are determined as follows:

  • Parts using this material must meet all requirements of the relevant assembly performance specification. The chemical composition and processing conditions must not be altered inappropriately, which could affect the quality of the parts. Before changing the chemical composition of the material, consultation with the materials and quality control department is mandatory.
  • Assemblies must be free from any defects that could affect appearance or performance.
  • The sound absorption performance must be approved by the responsible department. The PAD must be manufactured using fabric material with the initially approved thickness specification. If the fabric material thickness needs to be changed, it must be approved by the relevant departments.
  • Since the sample thickness in the table is the reference value, if the thickness of the fabric material needs to be changed, it must be approved by the relevant departments.
  • The sound absorption coefficient is based on the table provided in the small echo chamber method. The test method may be changed to the impedance tube method by agreement between the parties or relevant departments. However, upon approval by new companies and if the initially approved fabric material properties (weight, thickness, material) need to be changed, they must be tested in parallel with the small echo chamber method.
  • The manufacturer must provide information about the materials and the fiber content mixed with microfiber by adding it to the test report.

In addition, the acoustic pad must be tested using the methods specified in this standard and must comply with the requirements in the table titled “Requirements”.

The standard laboratory condition in which the tests will be performed is 23°C plus/minus 2°C and 50% plus/minus 5% relative humidity. All tests must be performed on samples at least 48 hours after molding and immediately following a conditioning period of at least 24 hours in the standard condition specified in this standard.

Test methods described in this standard include:

  • Weight: Samples are randomly cut into 300 mm x 300 mm sections. The weight and average weight per square meter are stated. At least five test samples must be used, and the average values must be reported.
  • Thickness: Must comply with the standard "ISO 9073-2 Textiles - Test methods for nonwoven fabrics - Part 2: Determination of thickness." However, a 1 cm3 circular pressure foot is used and measured at the midpoint of the sample with a pressure of 0,1 kPa. The thickness tester must be based on the standard "ISO 5084 Textiles - Determination of thickness of textiles and textile articles" and the minimum unit must be 0,01 mm. At least five test samples must be used, and the average values must be reported.
  • Tensile strength: Hyundai Kia must comply with MS 200-41 (soft vulcanized rubber test standard). However, the sample must be a No. 1 barbell, prepared in the MD and AMD directions, respectively, and the test must be conducted at a speed of 200 mm/min. At least five test samples must be used, and the average values must be reported.
  • Heat resistance: At least 5 test samples should be used and average values should be reported.
    • Tensile strength: The sample is prepared for tensile strength. It is placed in a thermostatic chamber at 80 degrees Celsius (plus/minus 2 degrees Celsius) for 50 hours. The tensile strength is then measured.
    • Shrinkage: Next, a 150 mm x 150 mm sample is aged, with a 100 mm x 100 mm mark aligned in the center. It is placed in a thermostatic chamber at 80 degrees Celsius (plus/minus 2 degrees) for 50 hours. It is then held at 23 degrees Celsius (plus/minus 2 degrees) and 50 percent relative humidity (plus/minus 5 percent) for 60 minutes. Shrinkage in the length and width directions is measured.
  • Moisture resistance: At least 5 test samples should be used and average values should be reported.
    • Tensile strength: The sample is prepared for tensile strength testing. It is placed in a humidity control chamber at 40°C (plus/minus 2°C) and 95% relative humidity for 336 hours. Tensile strength is then measured as described in the tensile strength test method.
    • Shrinkage: A 150 mm x 150 mm sample is then aged, aligned in the center with a 100 mm x 100 mm mark. It is then placed in a humidity control chamber at 40°C (plus/minus 2°C) and 95% relative humidity for 336 hours. It is then held at 23°C (plus/minus 2°C) and 50% relative humidity for 60 minutes. Shrinkage in the length and width directions is measured.
  • Water absorption: Three random samples, each measuring 100 mm x 100 mm, are placed horizontally in a heat and humidity control oven at 40°C (plus/minus 2°C) and 95% relative humidity for 16 hours. The moisture on the sample is then washed off with filter paper. At least five test samples should be used, and the average values should be reported.
  • Compressive strength ratio: Three random specimens with dimensions of 100 mm x 100 mm shall be placed between two steel panels with a thickness and dimensions greater than 8 mm and 100 mm x 100 mm, respectively. Then, a 500 g weight shall be placed in the center of the upper panel. The compressive strength ratio shall be measured under the specified conditions, at a temperature of 23°C plus/minus 2°C and a relative humidity of 50% plus/minus 5%, for 1 hour, and by removing the weight. At least five test specimens shall be used, and the average values shall be reported.

This standard also describes the following test methods:

  • Sound absorption coefficient
    • Small reverberation method
    • Impedance tube method
  • Smell
  • misting
  • Flammable property
  • Mold
  • The Heat Cycle
  • Peel strength
  • Thermal conductivity
