VW TL 52310 Microfiber Seat Cover Material and Decorative Material - Material Requirements
The standard “VW TL 52310 Microfiber seat cover material and decorative material - Material requirements” developed by the Volkswagen automobile company describes the material requirements for microfiber materials used in vehicle interior upholstery.

This standard applies to the following types:
- Type A: Decorative material without lamination
- Type B: Seat support and seat insert
- Type C: Center armrest, armrest and headrest
- Type D: Decorative material for door trim panel
- Type E: Decorative material for rear shelf
- Type F: Decor
The requirements in this standard are explained as follows:
- General requirements: Initial supply and approval of changes must comply with standard VW 01155. Avoidance of hazardous substances must comply with standard VW 91101. 2 m2 of material is required for a complete inspection. Due to its adverse contamination behaviour, the material must not be used in the following areas: in the grip area of the steering wheel and gear knob, on the dashboard and on seats with trim covers in light colours. Colorimetric measurement requirements are included in standard VW 50190. Deviations can only be accepted in consultation with the relevant department.
- Marking: Roll goods must have a clearly visible manufacturer's mark and a batch number on the back to facilitate traceability. The marking must not have any adverse effect on the face fabric. If necessary, a batch mark must be agreed with the relevant department.
- Conditioning: Before testing, samples must be conditioned in a 24/50554-23 standard atmosphere in accordance with VW 50 for at least 2 hours.
- Special requirements:
- Properties and appearance of unlaminated material: The material must be evenly dyed and must not have any surface defects or lines. Microfiber materials are assessed visually. A colorimetric assessment according to the VW 50190 standard can be performed and used as an assessment criterion. When doing so, the relevant original sample must be used as a reference.
- Properties and appearance of laminated material (composite material): The material with the support layer should be completely bonded to the face fabric. The individual layers should be laminated without tension. No hardening should occur.
- Chemical treatment: No finishing or impregnation agents should be used. Exceptions are possible in special cases by agreement with the relevant department. In these exceptions, the feel of the covering material must not be adversely affected. Any change in finishing or production method must be approved by means of a new material release. Substances that adversely affect light fastness or flammability, for example additives containing phosphates, should not be added to the face fabric.
- Material requirements: These requirements are specified in a table within the standard. The numerical values apply to each measured value. The hair direction (see section 5.1) shall be taken into account in the visual and measurement-based assessment of the surface. All tests shall be carried out on laminated material, except that tests on decorative material type A shall be carried out on non-laminated material. Tests on types B to F may also be carried out on non-laminated material, with agreement from the relevant department. For type A face fabric, the thickness shall be stated in mm and the mass per unit area in g/m2. For types B to F, when laminated material is tested, the structure shall be stated. This information shall include: a description of the structure (lamination materials: e.g. non-woven fabric, foam, knitted material, a data sheet on adhesive and material information with an indication of the lamination method), the thickness of the face fabric and the overall structure in mm and the mass per unit area of the face fabric, backing fabrics and the overall structure in g/m2.
