Developed jointly by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and the United States Automotive Research Council (USCAR), the SAE USCAR 28 standard describes the design, performance, and verification requirements for the initiator assembly used in airbag modules, seat belt pretensioners, and other electro-explosive devices.

An airbag is an inflatable cushion designed to protect car occupants from serious injury in the event of a collision. The airbag is designed to supplement the protection provided by seat belts and is part of an inflatable restraint system.
Seat belts are still needed to keep the occupant safely in place, especially in side impacts, rear crashes and rollovers. When a collision is detected, the airbags inflate instantly, supporting the exposed occupant with a large gas-filled pillow.
The purpose of the airbag is to slow down the forward movement of the occupant as evenly as possible. Inflation generally occurs when there is a collision force equal to hitting a brick wall at a speed of 16-24 km/h. The sensors receive information from an accelerometer built into a microchip.
In the inflation system of the airbag, sodium azide and potassium nitrate react to produce nitrogen gas. Hot nitrogen blasts inflate the airbag. The important point is whether the gas remains at high pressure throughout the life of the car and the cushion inflates quickly and reliably at various operating temperatures and without a loud explosion.
The seat belt pretensioner is part of the system that locks the seat belt in place in the event of a collision. During a collision, the pretensioner uses an explosive charge to start a concealed piston when sensors detect that an accident has occurred.
The piston continues to spin the seat belt reel rapidly and removes any slack in the seat belt. This is a critical system in the event of an accident because it places the occupants firmly in their seats and ensures they receive the maximum protection from the airbags.
Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services for initiating technical requirements and verification within the scope of SAE USCAR 28 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
