STJLR.51.5232 TÜV Toxproof Certification Requirements for Interior Materials

STJLR.51.5232 TÜV Toxproof Certification Requirements for Interior Materials

Like German manufacturers, Jaguar Land Rover also publishes its own steel standards. The standard published by this organization, “STJLR.51.5232 TÜV toxic-proof (toxproof) certification requirements for interior materials”, applies to all previously untested materials used in the production of the interior of Jaguar Land Rover vehicles. According to this standard,

STJLR.51.5232 TÜV Toxproof Certification Requirements for Interior Materials

  • All interior materials with a total surface area of 100 cm2 or more or a weight of 100 g or more must meet the requirements of the relevant section of this standard.
  • For all components identified in the table provided in the standard that may be in skin contact for more than 30 seconds, all materials must meet the requirements of the relevant section of this standard.
  • All black items that are repeatedly touched (e.g. keys, buttons and key fobs) must meet the requirements of the relevant section of this standard.

The purpose of this standard is to ensure that vehicle interior materials meet the requirements of the TÜV Toxproof (toxic-proof) criteria catalog. This standard is reviewed at least every three years from the date of the last revision or update.

The requirements in this standard are specified as follows:

  • All materials and components must comply with Jaguar Land Rover's restricted substance management requirements (STJLR.99.9999).
  • The supplier must confirm the validity of any test older than 5 years with JLR materials engineering.
  • All materials required to meet the relevant parts of this standard must be tested by TÜV laboratories and suppliers must send their materials directly to TÜV for analysis.
  • You can contact TÜV via its corporate website.
  • Suppliers must instruct TÜV to send a copy of the laboratory report directly to Jaguar Land Rover materials engineering.
  • All materials in the cabin of JLR vehicles with a surface area of 100 cm2 or more or a weight of 100 g or more must meet the following requirements as outlined in the TÜV Toxproof criteria (these tests must be carried out by an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory):
    • Natural latex should not be used.
    •  Parts in prolonged skin contact should be free of nickel and hexavalent chromium.
    • Scented substances (perfumes, fragrances) should not be used.
    • Target values for odour, formaldehyde and fogging are included in the table provided in the standard (all colours to be tested). Samples should be tested for odour within 4 weeks of production.
    • Target values for total volatile organics according to the VDA 277 standard are included in the table given in the standard (all colours to be tested).
    • Materials requiring formaldehyde content testing are listed in the table provided in the standard (all colours to be tested).
  • All materials used in applications where there is a high probability of skin contact for more than 30 seconds, as listed in the table provided in the standard, must pass the full set of tests described in the TÜV Toxproof criteria (Epicutaneous patch test). The list of applications in this table is not exhaustive and may be added on a program-specific basis at the discretion of JLR Materials Engineering. For coloured materials only applicable to the table, one colour must be tested for the full TÜV Toxproof criteria tests and all remaining colours must be tested for the azo dye requirements. For soft trim materials, 1 m2 and for hard trim materials, 4 A5 samples must be sent to TÜV for testing. Hard trim samples are provided in sheet form.
  • Polymers and elastomers with repeated skin contact (e.g. remote controls, switches, buttons, key fobs and dials), even for less than 30 seconds, should be tested for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) content if they are not included in the relevant part of this standard.
  • It is the responsibility of the Jaguar Land Rover component engineer to manage these requirements with their suppliers.

Our organization has a strong staff that closely follows the developments in the world in the field of science and technology and constantly improves itself. Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies provided for businesses in various sectors, there are also testing services in accordance with the standard "STJLR.51.5232 TÜV toxic-proof (toxproof) certification requirements for interior materials".
