VW TL 207 Reflective Coatings on Closed Plastic Reflectors and Coatings on the Inside of Light Units - Requirements

VW TL 207 Reflective Coatings on Closed Plastic Reflectors and Coatings on the Inside of Light Units - Requirements

The standard "VW TL 207 Reflective coatings on closed plastic reflectors and coatings on the inside of light units - Requirements" developed by the Volkswagen automobile company describes the requirements for vacuum-formed coatings that serve as mirror coatings on reflectors and lighting devices, as well as polymer coatings on the inside of light units, for example pad printing. This standard is suitable for reflective coatings and coatings according to this standard, for closed and protected reflectors and lighting devices against environmental influences.

VW TL 207 Reflective Coatings on Closed Plastic Reflectors and Coatings on the Inside of Light Units - Requirements

The requirements in this standard are explained under the following headings:

  • General requirements: Initial supply and approval of changes shall be in accordance with standard VW 01155. Outdoor abrasion shall be in accordance with standard VW 50185. Material conformity shall be in accordance with standard VW 91101. A minimum of eight finished parts are required for full testing. Full product documentation shall include a test report of the first sample, production sample or prototype part in accordance with this standard as well as the specifications given in the annex to the standard for all parts (Annex B). Areas on the part to which the requirements described below do not apply shall be marked on the drawing. Different requirements shall be specified. The coating shall not be damaged during correct assembly.
  • Appearance: Parts must have a uniform appearance on all surfaces and must conform to the drawing requirements. Pores, cracks, lines, bubbles and other defects that adversely affect the specified appearance are not permitted. Deviations from this must be noted on the drawing.
  • Conditioning: Parts must be one week old or 60 hours at 24 degrees for the tests in the table in this standard. Before testing, parts must be conditioned for 50554 hours in a 23/50-2 standard atmosphere in accordance with VW 24. Any deviations from this must be noted in the test report.
  • Test requirements: Tests are performed on individual parts (not on the assembly).

The following test methods are defined in this standard:

  • Environmental cycle test: This test is performed for 1200 cycles in accordance with the PV 8 standard. As a result, there should be no peeling of the coating.
  • Thermal aging test: This test is for 240 hours, the temperature should be adjusted according to the drawing. There should be no visible change in the result.
  • Condensation test in fixed condensation water atmosphere: This test is carried out in accordance with the standard “ISO 6270-2 Paints and varnishes - Determination of resistance to moisture - Part 2: Condensation (in-cabinet exposure with heated water tank)”. The test duration is 48 hours.
  • High temperature light exposure test for vehicle interior: This test is carried out in accordance with the PV 1303 standard for 10 cycles. This test is only applied to the polymer coating inside the lighting device and behind the glass containing plastic, for example, pad printing. Surface changes are monitored under lighting conditions according to the PV 3965 standard. As a result, the gray scale should be a maximum of 4,5, there should be no color change and no changes (e.g. cracks, stains, film, delamination, structural changes, discoloration, corrosion leakage, brightness changes, fibers visible through, glittering effect, rainbow effects, stickiness, inhomogeneity, deformation, loose carbon black particles).

The test report containing material and process data includes the following headings:

  • Supplier (name, address)
  • Drawing / representation of the part
  • Part description
  • Volkswagen drawing number / product number in the drawing
  • Supplier part number (optional)
  • Model stage / production date
  • Empty producer (name, location)
  • Material (VDA definition)
  • Material quality (product name)
  • Raw material producer (name, address)
  • Cleaning and pretreatment methods (manufacturer, product name)
  • Coating (if applied, manufacturer, product name, paint shop, location, date)
  • Coating company (name, location)
  • Coating element (e.g. aluminum) and coating method (applies only to metallization)
  • Additional protective coating (coating description, manufacturer, product name, coating company, location)
  • Color
