The FORD FLTM BI 104-04 standard developed by Ford Motor Company (FORD) describes a test method for measuring the relative adhesion of electroplated and topcoated films to phosphated steel panels. Adhesion is checked before and after immersion in warm water.

Adhesion work and cohesion (molecule attraction force) work are concepts that emerge with the wetting of liquids on solid surfaces. The most typical way to determine adhesion work is by contact angle and surface tension measurements. Measurements can be made with an optical tensiometer. Adhesion is important in any application where two dissimilar materials are bonded together. Wetability is required for good adhesion, and because of this contact angle, surface free energy measurements are often used to evaluate the surface prior to bonding.
Adhesion is the attraction between two dissimilar phases. Adhesion occurs due to the combination of these different mechanisms.
Adhesive failure is one of the most common types of failure mechanisms. There, two dissimilar materials are separated from each other. Failure can occur between a paint and a substrate, or between one of the two substrates that it adheres together with adhesive. Adhesive degradation occurs in the adhesive itself or inside a coating layer. Substrate failure is not related to the bonding process itself, as there is a problem with the substrate.
In bonding, wetting refers to the ease with which an adhesive can make close contact with and spread across a given substrate. Several forces (ionic, static, polar) contribute to good adhesion between the adhesive and substrates. Good wetting allows for a wider contact area where these forces can be effective. Consequently, good wetting is crucial for good bond formation. The degree of wetting of any substrate depends on the surface tension or critical surface energy of the substrate and the adhesive. As a general rule, for good wetting, the critical surface energy of the substrate should be higher than the critical surface energy of the adhesive.
