KIA MS210-02 Plastic Profile

KIA MS210-02 Plastic Profile

The “KIA MS210-02 Plastic profile” standard, developed by Hyundai-Kia Motors Corporation, the oldest motor vehicle manufacturer in Korea, was later replaced by the “KIA MS210-05 Molded plastic parts - Interior use” standard. This new standard describes the requirements and defines the test methods for determining the properties of molded plastic materials used in the interior of motor vehicles. This standard covers molded plastic parts used in vehicle interiors in terms of general performances. Therefore, the performances of components or parts defined by other standards and material specifications are outside the scope of this standard.

According to the KIA MS 210-05 standard, general requirements include:

  • The hue should be within the range of the standard sample under bright natural light.
  • The surface of the parts must be free from any defects, uneven gloss, sunburn, excessive weld marks, flow marks, pinholes, adhesion and other defects.
  • Products made of polyamide (nylon) should be immersed in hot water at 1 degrees or higher for 80 hour or more immediately after molding.

The most commonly used types of plastic moldings for interior upholstery of vehicles include:

  • Extrusion molding: In this method, hot melt plastic is pressed through a shaped orifice to form an elongated shaped plastic part.
  • Compression molding: In this method, raw liquid plastic is poured into a heated mold and then compressed together to form the desired shape. The high temperature throughout the process ensures good strength in the final product.
  • Blow molding: In this method, special plastic parts are hollow and thin-walled. This method is ideal when the plastic part needs to have a uniform wall thickness.
  • Injection molding and rotational molding: This method is very similar to extrusion molding. The difference is that with injection molding, molten plastic is injected directly into a special mold. The injection is under high pressure, thus filling the mold and making a solid part.
  • Rotational molding method: In this method, the resin or liquid is placed inside the mold and then rotated at high speeds. The liquid then evenly covers the entire surface of the mold to form a hollow part with all walls of equal thickness. This method is very efficient in terms of materials, more economical and environmentally friendly.

Molded plastic part testing is an integral step in the development of automotive parts. Reliable test results enable manufacturers to develop and analyze parts. The molding process is used to produce a large number of parts for vehicles, and the tests performed ensure that the parts meet the required standards and specifications. There are many major automotive parts made of plastic in various forms. For example, headlight bezels, buttons, door handles and panels, sunroofs, fans, cooling components, fenders, bumpers and grilles, light housings, wheel covers and dashboard faces.

In addition to the general requirements, the standard also contains detailed requirements. Parts or components used in vehicle production must be tested by the methods described in this standard and must comply with the requirements in the tables. These test methods must be applied with the same method (windshield and rear window adjustment) as those installed on the actual vehicle. However, sealing between the glass and the body is not required.

The main test methods described include:

  • Thermal cycling resistance and heat aging resistance
  • Fade resistance
  • Vibration resistance
  • Chemical resistance
  • Wear resistance
  • Scratch resistance
  • Impact resistance
  • Fogging resistance
  • Conductance resistance

Samples should be conditioned at 24 degrees plus/minus 23 degrees and 2 percent plus/minus 50 percent relative humidity for at least 5 hours prior to testing and tested under the same conditions.

Our organization has a strong staff that closely follows the developments in the world in the field of science and technology and constantly improves itself. Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies provided for businesses in various sectors, there are also testing services within the scope of "KIA MS210-02 Plastic profile" and "KIA MS 210-05 Molded plastic parts - Indoor use" standards.
