The GM4298P standard, developed by the General Motors company, describes the requirements necessary to achieve the conditions found in the neutral salt spray test cabinet. The chamber operation in the implementation of this standard is based on the ASTM B117 standard developed by the American Testing and Materials Organization (ASTM) (ASTM B117-19 Salt spray (fog) apparatus operation standard practice). This standard contains the apparatus, procedures and conditions necessary to establish and maintain a salt spray (fog) test environment. The appropriate apparatus that can be used is defined in the standard annex (Annex X1). However, this standard does not specify the type of test sample to be used for a particular product or the exposure times or interpretations to the results.

In general, salt spray testing is more suitable for quality control and process control evaluations. Other test methods seem more suitable for simulating field performance. Meanwhile, the terms salt spray and salt fog are commonly used in corrosion testing standards.
Salt spray testing is a common accelerated corrosion testing method that exposes metallic and non-metallic materials to a highly corrosive environment over an extended period of time to evaluate their relative corrosion resistance. This method is also used to determine the effectiveness of paints and coatings in protecting the substrate material from corrosion. Tests are usually performed between 24 and 1000 hours. The test typically involves using a 5 percent solution of sodium chloride atomized inside a sealed chamber to create a brine mist that accelerates corrosion of the materials being tested.
Test specimens are generally inspected at regular intervals to monitor and record deterioration of specimens, for example when corrosion begins or after the specified time has elapsed. In some cases, after testing the samples using a special microscope, localized corrosion phenomena such as pitting in metallic materials are allowed to be characterized, the depth of penetration is determined and the severity of the corrosion determined. This test also determines whether any corrosion inhibitor in paints and coatings is working.
Our organization also provides salt spray test services within the scope of GM4298P standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
