BMW WS 08014 Acrylic and Rubber Based Double Sided Adhesive Tapes

BMW WS 08014 Acrylic and Rubber Based Double Sided Adhesive Tapes

The standard "BMW WS 08014 Double-sided adhesive tapes based on acrylic and rubber", developed by BMW, a multinational vehicle manufacturer headquartered in Germany, applies to double-sided pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes with an acrylic and rubber-based adhesive layer that are incorporated into the BMW production process as purchased parts or as ready-to-print components. These double-sided pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes are applied or mounted on one side and protected with a suitable paper or film (protective liner).

For purchased parts, this material specification serves as a data requirement list that allows BMW to evaluate the bid or technical application. Specific material requirements are determined by the supplier; the requirements in the specification prevail.

For print-ready components, this material specification is considered a requirements document. The material requirements in this material specification apply. If no specific requirements are specified, they should be taken from component-specific requirement documents, such as the quality specification. This material specification defines the scope of minimum quality requirements for initial sampling and annual requalification.

Unless other requirements are specified in the specification or quality control document, the following component requirements apply:

  • The double-sided pressure-sensitive adhesive tape used must meet the requirements of the BMW GS 97109 standard on the surface of the bonding component facing the structural component.
  • This material specification also applies to single-sided adhesive tapes without defined tension.
  • This material specification should be used in conjunction with the BMW GS 97026 standard.
  • BMW GS 97059 applies to self-adhesive decorative functional films.

All development stages of double-sided pressure-sensitive adhesive tape must be clearly identified on the drawing by specifying this material specification, abbreviated designation, and the component materials. Depending on the material to be bonded (including the substrate), the approval authority must list the component property categories of the double-sided pressure-sensitive adhesive tape on the drawing to define the component properties and target values. The component properties and categories are listed in the table provided in the standard.

The general requirements are set out as follows:

  • Double-sided pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes should be suitable for long-term use between minus 35 degrees and plus 85 degrees, and short-term use for 30 minutes between 105 degrees and 120 degrees, depending on the application.
  • The target values in the table titled "Combination of Part Materials and Composite Part Surface Properties" must be achieved, and the failure mode (shape of fracture) must be documented. Due to the physical adhesion mechanism of double-sided adhesive tapes, adhesion failure is not necessarily a negative consequence. This requires that the substrate surfaces be free of adhesion-reducing residue.
  • The supplier is responsible for implementing the bonding requirements regarding surface pretreatment and the use of mounting aids, depending on the installation location of the pressure-sensitive adhesive tape and the order placed.
  • The self-adhesive coating must be protected with a suitable removable protective paper (liner).

In the complex world of automotive engineering, standards are the invisible architects of safety, performance, and reliability. Among these, BMW's proprietary features stand out for their precision and innovation. One of these standards, BMW WS 08014, represents a cornerstone of BMW's commitment to quality control and material integrity.

The BMW WS 08014 standard was developed as part of BMW's response to increasingly stringent global regulations regarding emissions, safety, and sustainability. Unlike broader industry standards such as ISO or DIN, this standard is tailored to the unique requirements of high-performance vehicles.

The BMW WS 08014 standard essentially covers requirements for high-strength, low-alloy steels used in structural and chassis components. These materials must withstand extreme stresses while maintaining their lightweight properties to optimize fuel efficiency and roadholding.

The basic parameters are:

  • Composition: Primarily iron-based, with controlled additions of carbon, manganese, and microalloys such as niobium and vanadium for grain refinement. Phosphorus and sulfur levels are strictly limited to improve weldability.
  • Mechanical properties: Yield strength 450-550 MPa, tensile strength exceeding 600 MPa, and at least 20 percent elongation for ductility. Impact toughness tested at -20 degrees Celsius to simulate winter conditions.
  • Surface treatment: Phosphate coating or galvanizing is mandatory for corrosion resistance with a minimum salt spray test time of 720 hours according to ASTM B117 standard.
  • Test protocols: Compliance, non-destructive testing (NDT) such as ultrasonic testing, and 10 at 80 percent of yield strength^Requires up to 7 cycles of fatigue cycling. Environmental simulations include thermal shock from -40°C to 120°C.

Suppliers must certify batches through the BMW supplier quality management system, which provides traceability back to the raw materials. Non-compliance can lead to production shutdowns, highlighting the standard's role in zero-defect production.

Our organization, with its competent and experienced team, has been understanding the needs of its customers for years, providing them with the advanced testing services they need, and assisting them in the establishment, implementation, and improvement of management systems. In this context, we also provide testing services in accordance with the "BMW WS 08014 Acrylic and Rubber-Based Double-Sided Adhesive Tapes" standard.
